Teachings of the Great Mother

Fall has arrived in its full array of color here on Vancouver Island and as I found myself walking through Seal Bay the other day, I stopped to pick up some of the giant leaves as I admired its beauty.

As I walked, I gathered quite a collection, not quite knowing what I would do with them, yet sensing a need to gather and hold them in my hand as I walked my journey through the forest. Perhaps I would create some sort of art, some way to display for myself and others the beauty of these leaves so that they may be loved for just a while longer . . . .

Silly me. As I ended my walk with the handful of leaves, I heard a gentle whisper, “Are you taking those with you, or placing them back down to be laid to rest with the others?” I searched my heart and feelings for a moment, quickly flashing through the options in my mind, arriving back with a humble answer, “Am I allowed to take these? May I have them for a little while?”

“Of course Dear, it is your choice to choose,” came back the reply.

I placed my large handful of fallen leaves carefully in the vehicle and remembered an understanding that to take a gift from the great mother one must leave an offering in its place. I considered for a moment what I could possibly offer in exchange for the gift I had received and knew in my heart that there was truly only one thing of equal measure, my gratitude and my love.

I took a deep breath, visualizing myself walking the path I had just completed, remembering each and every place I had picked up a leaf and touched the ground in my mind’s eye, sending love and gratitude deep into the earth. I could see the light penetrate into the ground, connecting to the roots, spreading into the trees, rising up and down until all in that space had received an equal measure of my love and gratitude.

With a tear in my eye, I drove home arriving a few minutes later to place my collection in a vase on my counter where I could see and appreciate its beauty. I had a feeling as I arranged them that they were not to stay very long, yet I also realized a sensation that I needed to admire their beauty and appreciate them for just a bit longer. I saw each and every leaf as having completed their journey. Their time upon this earth now entering its final stages. A natural process and cycle as the guardians in the trees understand the time to release and offer up to the great mother all that is ready to be transformed by love. A feast slowly being prepared for the season of spring when new life will arise from the nutrients of this great offering.

It is no different for you and I. We too are asked to release energetically old patterns, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that do not serve the future version of our truth that calls us forward. A child cannot continue to wear the same shoes no matter how much they may love them, for they will begin to hurt as the feet outgrow what once was.

We all change. We all experience love, loss, pain, regret, sacrifice. Yet in the surrender we can find great love awaiting us as we release and fall into the arms of the great mother.

Search your heart for what is so naturally ready to leave in love. That vase of leaves within a few hours had dried up, and by morning crumbled with my very touch. A powerful visual representation that we cannot hold onto what has passed it’s time no matter what.

Today, I will take the journey back to the forest and replace what I gathered from this place with a greater awareness in my heart and deep appreciation for its teachings.

Much love,

Lisa Richard
